Yellowstone - 3 days 2 nights...

Yellowstone National Park was a much needed, well deserved mini-vacation before the beginning of fall semester. The idea started pretty randomly and then actually grew into a solid plan that we slid in right in time. There were wild animals, deep talks, waterfalls, freezing sleeps, beautiful colors, and long drives through the night.

All in all, I had a great time kicking it around Yellowstone with these crazy people.

OUR FREAKING CAMPING SPOT / early morning planning session / grand canyon of yellowstone / mammoth hot springs / a (possibly staged) candid rafting picture / mesa falls / the whole gang in the rain / old faithful / west thumb geyser basin / eating lunch in middle of nowhere bear land / grand prismatic spring

The Plans for After I Graduate...?

My last year of college begins in a few weeks and my mind is going crazy thinking of the many paths I could choose at the end of it; typical of any senior. I wouldn't say I'm the type of person who is a 'planner,' however I do like to have a general idea of where I'm going and what I'm doing. As of now I am considering four very different options. Which is leaving my nerves...the very opposite of settled. I suppose that is the way I like it though. The anticipation is killing me but it's incredibly exciting.

My best answer:

On Artistry...

                                                                                         (Please excuse the bad quality of the picture...)
I am slowly working on becoming a better artist. And I'm really enjoying it because it's more of an outlet than anything else. This quote essentially sums up everything: “To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it.”

The picture above shows some of the process I go through while painting. This painting in particular is of Worcester Cathedral, which I painted for my roommate Alex's birthday. A fellow anglophile, she had visited it when she went to England earlier this summer. It's also a testament to our love of Worcestershire sauce (best eaten on a piece of Welsh rarebit ((basically toasted bread with mustard and cheese melted on top))). Its place of origin the same as this cathedral. Not to mention, it was an excuse to paint a typical scene from the most beautiful country in the world.

Painting is just one of the artistic talents I'm striving to develop. The other is temporarily on hold until fall semester. And I'm dying to get back into it! It's a bit embarrassing but 80% of the decision of where to live this last year of college was made by how close I could get to the building with the ceramics studio. And I literally ended up in the closest place to it...right across the street. Thankfully, truly thankfully, I ended up with at least one awesome roommate I know I love (Shelby) and a huge top-loft bedroom...in a very nice complex, which I got a serious discount on. Benefits of working in the BYU off-campus housing office, I think.

I'm so excited to get my hands back into that clay and make things that are me. I'm freakishly attached to that studio. It's the only thing that saved me from going insane last year while taking some of the hardest classes of my major. It's one of those places that always makes me happy when I'm there, no matter my mood beforehand...it easily changes into nothing but a content sense of calm and genuine happiness. This year will be especially interesting because I'll be the only non-Visual Arts Studio major in the class. I was recommended by my previous ceramics professor to take the higher level/majors only class because she saw, quote: "skill and a unique vision" in me. And honestly, when it comes to creating art...I am not going to shy away. I may not be extremely talented but I am determined to create and enjoy it anyways.

My determination to do so only grew when I read THIS fantastic article by Neal A. Maxwell on how we should cultivate our artistic talents. In the article he talks about how we shouldn't compare ourselves to other people. Everyone is on their own timing and it is pointless and wrong to envy and be discouraged by people who we consider to be much better than us or that are farther along than we are. We all start at the beginning at some point. I loved how he explained that each time we create something, we are creating something that has never been before. We are unique and no painting has ever been painted in the exact way that you painted it, no piece of pottery had been thrown and fired the same. When we use the talents that God gave us, we are unique in our expression of it. It is similar to the way that God created US and made each of us unique. We emulate God when we cultivate our talents and we also glorify Him.

Elder Maxwell also promises that: "The greater our sensitivity to the Spirit, the greater our response to beauty, grace, and truth in all their forms as these exist about us. Our righteousness opens us up like a blossoming flower to both detail and immensity. Sin, on the other hand, closes us down. It scalds the taste buds of the soul."

This is so beautiful. I've always thought I had an appreciation for the small, lovely things around me but I never realized that I could heighten my senses and enjoyment even MORE through the Spirit. This is certainly one of the most wonderful promises I have heard pertaining to making our lives more beautiful, happy, and full.

No big deal, just standing in my favorite hallway in the whole world. If you haven't seen it in real life, please tell me you at least recognize it from the Da Vinci Code! Eh hem, my total guilty-pleasure movie. I was quite content there...standing in a gallery filled with masterpieces from the Italian renaissance...quite content.

Listen...

Because it always sounds good and feels good. Song of the summer? Perhaps...I'm sure it will be once I see them in concert. On my freaking birthday! That's right. It's gonna be a great one.

-To consider something thoughtfully-

This is from a beautiful poem called The Invitation, written by someone named Oriah Mountain Dreamer. I wonder, if I had a name like that...would this kind of poetry just flow from my hand too? But really, I truly adore what she has written.

It reminds us to live deeply and not be afraid to take risks; in love and in life. To not get caught up in the monotony of life and instead try to connect with everyone around us and everything within us.

Around here...

                                                                              (Can I just say, I love my National Geographic old world map.)

I am not a morning person. So taking a job that starts at 8am every morning probably wasn't the best idea. You would think. Everyone around me apparently agreed with this idea, because when I said I was working at 8am Monday through Friday...they all laughed and said good luck with that. My dad, my best friends, my siblings, my roommates... Really I should be thankful that those around me clearly know me SO well. However, I feel like I have proved everyone wrong! Even myself.

I have actually been enjoying working early in the morning. I feel incredibly productive by the time 5pm rolls around. Not only am I always on time, I usually even get there early and before everyone else. AND I am perfectly sociable and cheery. Yay me!

All this early rising has made me really appreciate my bed these days. I've got a great roommate who, like me, loves to keep the window open at night to feel the cool breeze. Unfortunately, this can make getting out of my warm cozy bed in the morning even harder. Add in the fact that our room now smells like lilacs (due to a lovely candle) and....man, its a wonder I ever leave that bed.

Yesterday was the summer solstice and thus, the first official day of summer. I am a big fan of change and I was feeling a bit worn out at the end of school in May so getting a new job and starting a new season has been the perfect way to get my spirits back up. I have a renewed conviction to live a life filled with happiness, faith, health, and rich memories. And I won't settle for anything else.

A summer fling...

"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."
                                                                                                                                                                      ~F. Scott Fitzgerald

Yes, its been a while. Every year when school comes around in fall, this blog has unfortunately been put on hold for less enjoyable activities like writing eight page essays every week.

This blog is my summer fling. But who knows, maybe this year it could turn into more.

Lately...

 A lot of things have happened in this last month!  For me, this time of the year (end of summer, beginning of fall) is a time of new beginnings, uncertain challenges, and excitement about the unknown. And I absolutely love it. So...

  • I turned 21 years old! Officially an adult.
  • I was homeless and bumming it at a few friends houses for 2 weeks (thank goodness for those lovely people).
  • I've been working hard at my job and moved up in the place.
  • I started classes. And I really, really like them! My political science major continues to make me a happy student.
  • I moved into a beautiful condo (pictured above).
  • I've made a bunch of new friends. And my new roommates are a Mexican ballroom dancer and a fellow anglophile! We is crazy fun together.
  • Gave two talks in church. (I'm a spiritual beast.)
  • Cut myself some seriously hot bangs.
  • Received plane tickets from my dad to fly home to Boise on September 14th through the 17th! Home for the first time since before Scotland! Get ready Boise :)

Rare Fresh Air

I didn't try to rhyme the title, so don't judge! I WAS trying, however, to get across the point that Utah is so smokey these days that its hard to get any fresh air. But, my friends and I found it! Near a waterfall up in a canyon. Plus, according to this screenshot, my city is due for a week of thunderstorms! BEST. NEWS. EVER!!

Anyways, back to the waterfall. My roommate Chelsie and I were very bored one afternoon, so we called up our friend Matt who always has good ideas of things to do. He said...'Lets go to a waterfall!' This was obviously a better idea than anything we were coming up with so we changed, grabbed our shoes, and headed up the canyon together.

The water was glistening! Also, Chelsie is fully unaware of the fact that her socks are showing BSU pride. Blue and orange baby! (Sorry...college football season is almost upon us. I highly suggest you watch this preview for my other favorite team.)

After hiking on a path up to the waterfall, we decided to actually climb down the waterfall to get to the bottom. It was fun! And I only fell twice!

 "And above all watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."

Keane

(My roommate Chelsie said, when she saw this photo, "You did not take that." And I informed her (as I am you) that yes, yes I did.)

Alright, I said before that I loved Keane and they are my favorite...but they've officially jumped into another league that will never be beaten. They sounded fantastic live and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. And Keane did as well! On Twitter after the show, they posted, "Salt Lake City wins best gig of the tour!" They came out for 3 encores because we were singing and screaming! Tom was like, 'you guys deserve more songs!' (In a British accent.)

Prepare to be insanely, insanely jealous of how close I got to them. I seriously took all these photos by myself (except for the ones Im in...). We, my roommate Katie and I, started out sitting on the ground waiting for the concert to start, then we got up and made our way to the front. We went from the 5th row back, to the 4th row, to the 3rd, 2nd, and finally for the last few songs...the 1st row!!!

Yea, that's my hand, practically touching Tom. And also, you will notice....he is totally looking at me! I caught our eye contact on camera! You know if he weren't married, he would have jumped off that stage, taken my hand, and kissed me right there. First of all because I am one of Keane's most devoted fans and secondly because I was lookin like hot stuff (see 2nd picture and the one below). Honestly, Im surprised I didn't pass out at this moment. You are looking at one of the longest dreams of my life coming true! :)

And here we are at the end of the concert, totally happy and fully satisfied with our evening!

I love you Keane!! <3

My week in photos...

Hello friends! Here's how I spent my week according to Instagram. I hope yours has been just as great!

1. Homemade sushi night with friends. We watched a 1962 samurai movie called Sanjuro to compliment the Japanese food.  Sushi is so. Freaking. Delicious.

2. Walking around my 'Provo Historical District' neighborhood in the hot afternoon. Yes, its true. I live in the historical district!

3. One of my roommates is a great artist and she did a bit of her own on me in the form of a henna bracelet. The perfect summer accessory? I think so.

4. Many of my afternoons have been spent watching Euro 2012. I love it. (Not quite as good as college football but it's doing well enough to curve those football cravings.) Oh, and keep rockin on England. I love you and miss you.

Happy weekend!

Music...

{Music}
-The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion-

I'm beginning another series. Every once and a while I will share a song, or songs, that I can't get enough of. This week Keane is my focus.

I have loved Keane since I was 11 years old when their first album, Hopes and Fears, came out. Three guys- a singer, a piano player, and a drummer. Perfection. Oh, and they're British -- perfection times perfection! I grew up with Keane, so much so, that every one of their songs reminds me of a different time in my life, a different memory. They've added a band mate in the past couple years and their music has evolved a little since Hopes and Fears but they're still the Keane I know and love. And this next Tuesday I finally get to see them in concert! I could not be more excited! I will probably be hyperventilating by the time they come out on stage...at which point, I really hope I don't pass out because I want to actually see and hear them live.

Sovereign Light Cafe is a single from their new album that came out on May 12th. So very good. I would write you a list of my favorite Keane songs but I literally love all of them. Definitely go check out a few more.

Summer concerts are fantastic, but to me, this is going to be the best of them all!

-To consider something thoughtfully-

And so begins a new series where every Monday, I'll share some sort of inspirational thought. Mondays need this sort of thing, I think.

“Don’t be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is certainly something I will be thinking about this week. Too often I let my problems be the main focus of my life. I let them determine how I plan my days; how I act in different circumstances. But no longer! It's time for a change. From now on, I will work on planning my days around things that make me feel appreciative, breathless, and captivated. And I will focus on the positives. Because there are many. I will live in the moment and be led by God, my personal values, and my passions.

The hand that signed the paper...

The hand that signed the paper felled a city;
Five sovereign fingers taxed the breath,
Doubled the globe of dead and halved a country;
These five kings did a king to death.

The mighty hand leads to a sloping shoulder,
The finger joints are cramped with chalk;
A goose’s quill has put an end to murder
That put an end to talk.

The hand that signed the treaty bred a fever,
And famine grew, and locusts came;
Great is the hand that holds dominion over
Man by a scribbled name.

The five kings count the dead but do not soften
The crusted wound nor stroke the brow;
A hand rules pity as a hand rules heaven;
Hands have no tears to flow.

~Dylan Thomas

This is one of my favorite poems. And Dylan Thomas is one of my favorite poets. (That is a picture of his poetry workspace above).  Don't worry, I'm not going to go all 'English class' on you. Poetry, in a general sense, is not my thing. However, I do have a few favorites: Dylan Thomas, John Clare, William Wordsworth, and William Blake.

The poem above is a bit different from the others that Dylan Thomas has written. Its more direct rather than abstract, meaning that more people are able to grasp its meaning. Which I believe is very important because this poem is about something very important.

I loved this poem even before I discovered my intense passion for politics and governments. And, I think this is one of the best poems written about politics. It's just as applicable to the political situation now, as it was when it was written. The best line is (in my opinion) "Great is the hand that holds dominion over Man by a scribbled name." Thomas reminds us what a great responsibility it is to hold so much power over others. These days, I think it's almost impossible not to abuse that power in some way. Some countries just do it more obviously than others. And whether the world is going to change for better or for worse, I think its important to be aware of the consequences of our actions. So please, dont just read this poem:  remember it.

Refresh...

(This is a picture of the pathway I took to get to an old Roman amphitheater ruin in the Swiss countryside.)

Oh, life and how it gets away from me. After a short trip to Switzerland, I'm officially back from my internship at the Scottish Parliament. As always, it was weird getting back into the swing of things, but I moved into my new apartment this last weekend and I finally feel set.

I also feel set with school now too. I was crazy busy right after getting back because I had to finish my internship classes. That meant a lot of essay writing and editing, including a 22-page policy recommendation paper on "Nuclear Disarmament in an Independent Scotland." I made up the topic. And I loved it. I also got an A on it. I'm pretty much legit. So now that I'm caught up with my 3 new spring classes, I can focus on getting a job. Too bad I can definitely guarantee it wont be as awesome as my job back in Edinburgh...

As you may have noticed, I renovated my blog. I really needed to do it and I love the way it's turned out. It feels clean, simple, and fresh - the way I want to live my life right now.  I hope to be back blogging more often. Well no, I don't hope, I commit to actually doing it. And for simplicities sake, if you want to get updates about when I have a new post, put your email in that little space at the end of the right column and hit submit.

So for now, this ^ lovely campus is where you'll find me, especially on the 2nd floor in the library. I hope to visit Boise sooner rather than later and spend time with all my family and friends that I haven't seen since the beginning of the year. Also, I need to get them their souvenirs soon or else I will end up eating all their Scottish shortbread and Swiss chocolate I brought back. And I wouldn't want to do that...

In which I make you fall in love with Edinburgh...

I've been to a lot of cities in Europe. I used to think Prague was my favorite but then Paris overtook Prague. I know it sounds cliche to love Paris so much but my goodness...it truly deserves every song sang, book written, and movie made about it.

Dont you agree?
As much as I loved Paris however, it did not hold the top spot for very long. It very quickly lost out to Edinburgh. It was a losing battle really, ever since I stepped out of the Edinburgh airport. A month after I arrived in Edinburgh, I left and went to Paris and London...it was after I came back that I realized how much I was in love with Edinburgh. I also believe its the best city in the UK. I love everything British, really, I do. The other cities I've been to in Britain really have been great but they're not as entirely filled to the brim with beauty, history, and Britishness (yes, I did just make that a word) as Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has a dark look about it. Its all stone, windy roads, misty fog, small alleys, and mossy cemeteries. You can feel the history. The city has the same layout and most of the same buildings as it did in the 1800's. My building below, for example, was built in 1876.

You can see that they look very similar. Most of the buildings in this city are the close to the same height. So when you get up a hill, you look over the city and all you see are a ton of lovely stone buildings with chimneys and then church spires. I absolutely love it. The population is about 450,000 people. So its not a huge city with tons of people in it but it still manages to have a 'big city' feel about it.

It can be easy to forget that Edinburgh is a costal city, right on the edge of the North Sea. The beaches are beautiful, even if they aren't exactly warm. And the water's blue.  Then there's Arthurs Seat and the Salisbury Crags...

Isn't it unbelievably beautiful? Arthur's Seat is actually an extinct volcano and it lies right in the middle of the city. I've noticed that the colors of the city match the colors of Arthur's seat. The stones used for the buildings is similar to the color of the stone of the Crags (cliffs) while the different colors of green and moss are everywhere in the city...on trees, on the buildings, on railings, and of course, the ground.

Rain. We must talk rain. This is a city in Britain we're talking about.

I'm a firm believer that rain makes everything look more beautiful. And there's a different atmosphere, more serious, more dramatic. The colors are darker and deeper; saturated and not washed out. Everything glistens because the raindrops and wet surfaces reflect light. I've never seen a city come more into its own than Edinburgh in the rain.

This is the Scottish Parliament. I love this building. Its crazy, literally mad...but I love it. I tend to think this is what happens when Edinburgh tries to be modern. Have you ever heard that quote that goes something like, "Show me someone's greatest weakness and I will show you his greatest strength.' Well yea, think really hard about that...and how it applies to this situation...ha...ha.

Last of all, I must talk about the people of Edinburgh. Yea, I'm pretty sure they're like the nicest in Europe. Or at least they appear that way because they are so unbelievably charming! Seriously, you can only be called lassie, love, or madam so many times before your heart begins to entirely melt. You can only have so many doors opened, so many directions kindly given, and so many smiles directed at you before you're sucked in and start to feel your heart brimming with love for these people.

I truly love Edinburgh. I could not have ever dreamed this city treating me better than it has. Of course, I wish I didn't have to leave; I'm finding it really rather heartbreaking. Though, I can tell you that I will certainly be back one day.

~Brea

Highly notable honorable mentions:  The Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, the kilts and bagpipes, and Calton Hill.
